Site Description
The Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) is an urban, community mental health center, owned by the State of Connecticut and operated by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) in partnership with the Yale University Department of Psychiatry. The Center provides innovative services and solutions to challenging problems of patient care, drawing on research into causes, treatment, and prevention of behavioral disorders. In addition, the Center is committed to educating the next generation of behavioral health professionals, who will not only care for the seriously ill but also continue the missions of education and research into the nature and treatment of serious mental and addictive disorders.
Fellowship Description
The fellow will be placed in the Acute Services unit at the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC). Acute Services unit serves as the main portal of entry for patients entering into the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) providing: (a) urgent walk-in (e.g. psychiatric evaluation, treatment and disposition); (b) mobile outreach services; and (c) brief treatment.
Training objectives for the fellowship include the following:
- Develop skills in community-based assessment, with regard to appropriate interventions and crisis/risk evaluations
- Obtain a working knowledge of the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria
- Develop skills relating to documentation of client contacts, including intake assessments, progress notes and diagnostic instruments
- Learn to conduct mobile crisis evaluations in conjunction with area agencies and local police departments
