Curriculum

Our residents participate in a class among the extraordinary specimens housed at Yale Medical Library's Cushing Center. The session, on neuroscience, is part of the residency program's "Brain Camp".

We continue to maintain a long tradition of strong clinical and research programs in the biological, psychological, and social determinants of mental health. Each of these models is represented in the core didactic curriculum to enable you to have the knowledge necessary to provide your patients with the best treatment available. This exposure will also help you determine which aspects of these models you want to incorporate in your own career. For example, PGY-II coursework includes:

Neuroscience and Somatic Treatments ("Brain Camp")
Theories of the Mind and Psychological Treatments ("Mind Camp")
Social Determinants of Mental Health and Rehabilitative Treatments

Integrated Training Program

Residency applicants interested child and adolescent psychiatry may apply for the Albert J. Solnit Integrated Training Program, a joint venture between the Yale Department of Psychiatry and the Yale Child Study Center.

Clinical Curriculum

In addition to providing opportunities to manage patients in different clinical settings, the clinical curriculum is designed to ensure that you will rotate in many different systems of care.

Centralized Didactic Curriculum and Grand Rounds

We have created a centralized curriculum that actively engages the residents with material pertinent to their year of training and covers the broad spectrum of core knowledge that they need to become excellent psychiatrists. The use of adult learning principles, such as active involvement from the residents in the learning process and presenting material at the time when the residents are engaged in the issue, have been emphasized in the revised curriculum.

Research Training

Our residency program offers a variety of opportunities to gain experience in basic science, translational, and clinical research.

Psychotherapy Training Program

Our Long Term Care Clinic and Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy programs develop our resident's psychotherapy skills and emphasize mentorship.

Core Skills Training Program

We believe that in order to become a great psychiatrist, it is important that you master a core set of skills.

Yale Global Mental Health Program

Yale Psychiatry’s Global Mental Health Program is an exciting new concentration that capitalizes on the broad and diverse experiences of our faculty and residents. Originated by residents, the program supplements current courses and electives with additional mentoring, community service, scholarly projects, and clinical experiences.

Individualized Education Plan

Active participation in developing your own education plan during residency allows you to begin to tailor your education to your own specific career interests.
