Research in the News: Yale researcher explores what makes some people resilient in the face of trauma

October 04, 2012

Individuals respond to stress, trauma, and abuse very differently. The study of resilience seeks to explain why some people suffer debilitating disabilities such as post traumatic stress disorder while others with the same experience have only mild psychological symptoms that quickly disappear. In a Perspective published Oct. 5 in the journal Science, Yale researcher Steven M. Southwick and Dennis Charney of the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine explore complex genetic, developmental, and environmental factors that can increase the risk of or protect against depression in the face of stress, adversity and trauma.
