Joan Cook is appointed to American Psychological Association panel tasked with developing guideline for PTSD treatment

The American Psychological Association (APA) Board of Directors has named Joan M. Cook, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry at Yale, to its Clinical Treatment Guideline Development Panel for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Dr. Cook is affiliated with the department's Psychology Section.

The 11-person panel will write the guideline for the treatment of PTSD based on a systematic review of research literature. The appointments were announced in December 2012.

Dr. Cook's clinical and research interests focus on traumatic stress, geriatric mental health, and the dissemination and implementation of effective mental health services in the community.

She is currently the principal investigator of a National Institute of Mental Health grant examining the sustained use of two evidence-based psychotherapies, Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy, nationally in the Department of Veterans Affairs residential Post-traumatic Stress Disorder treatment programs.

She has been active in the APA and also serves on the board of directors of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
